Negative taken for September 7, 1960, Arkansas Gazette article "Journey Into Cherokee County Proves Pleasant," B1:3. One of two historical markers showing the location of Dwight Mission. The mission was set up to help the Cherokee Native Americans when Arkansas/Okalahoma was part of the western territory. The mission was originally built by Rev. Cephas Washburn in 1820. It is named for the president of Yale University. The mission was located west of Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas. It was later relocated to Oklahoma. The marker reads, "No. 023. Pope County. The first Protestant Mission to the Indians (west of Russellville.) On this spot the Rev. Cephas Washburn (1793-1860) in 1820 established a mission for the Western Cherokee Indians. He named it Timothy Dwight Mission in honor of the then President of Yale University. The mission later was moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma.) 1836 Arkansas Centennial Comm. - Arkansas History Comm. 1936."
